How to Create a Customised Doormat for Your Business or Shop: Everything You Need to Know

Do you need a custom doormat for your business but don’t know where to start?
Whether you manage a shop, professional studio, office or company, this guide explains how to design and order a made-to-measure custom doormat for your business — considering every detail, from shape and size to color choice and material selection.

Why choose a custom doormat for your business?

Before getting into the practical steps, let’s take a step back — why choose a custom doormat in the first place?
Because it serves a double purpose: it helps keep your premises clean while also acting as a branding and design element.

A doormat personalized with your logo, brand name or slogan that reflects your company’s personality can:
• strengthen your brand’s visual identity
• communicate professionalism and attention to detail
• enhance the first impression and overall customer experience

If you’d like to learn more, we’ve written an article explaining why a custom doormat can also be a powerful marketing tool.

Take accurate measurements

The first step in creating your perfect custom doormat is measuring the space accurately.
It might seem simple, but it’s essential to achieving a precise and tidy result.

Follow these steps:
measure width × height: use a rigid tape measure and note the dimensions in centimeters (e.g. 90×150 cm). Be careful not to mix them up — especially if the mat includes a logo or text where orientation matters. If the mat is circular, simply measure the diameter.

  • measure thickness: if the mat needs to be recessed flush with the floor, also measure the depth of the recess using the same rigid tape measure. If the recess is near a door, we recommend subtracting 1–2 mm from the total height to prevent the mat from obstructing the door when opened.
Check multiple points to ensure the recess is even, as small variations can affect the result.
Our custom doormats have a standard thickness of 12–13 mm, but we can increase this by adding pvc layers if required.
  • custom shapes: if your mat must fit into a specific recessed area (technically called a shaped mat), take precise measurements of all sides. In this case, we recommend asking someone experienced to assist you, as we produce the mat based on your provided measurements.
  • logo orientation: especially for recessed or shaped mats, make sure to specify which direction the logo or text should face (normally oriented towards the entrance so it’s readable upon entry).
  • non-standard sizes: don’t worry — at zerbini.shop, we can produce any size. (this year, we even made the largest doormat in the world!)
In most cases, we join two or more mat sections seamlessly to achieve the required size. If your project has special dimensions, contact us and we’ll find the best solution.

Choose the shape

A doormat doesn’t have to be rectangular — it all depends on your space and design preferences.
At zerbini.shop, we can create any shape: square, round, semicircular or fully customized.
We’ve even designed mats shaped like our clients’ logos!

To choose the best shape, ask yourself:
• where will the mat be placed?
• should it cover the entire area or just a section?
• will it be recessed into the floor?
• would you like to create a unique visual effect?

The shape is an important design element, so if you want something distinctive, don’t hesitate to go beyond convention.
Once these aspects are clear, you’ll know which shape suits your project best.

Choose the colors

Color choice is a key part of personalization — make the most of it.
Your doormat colors should:
• match your brand’s visual identity
• complement the interior color palette (floors, walls, furniture)
• offer good contrast so that logos or text remain legible

Our custom mats are made from synthetic coir and decorated using the inlay technique, where logos and text are composed of separate colored inserts precisely cut and fitted into the base mat — not printed.
You can choose from 25 available colors for both the background and the personalized elements.

Prepare the graphic file

Once all the above details are defined, the final step is to prepare the logo or artwork file for the inlay.
For perfect results, please provide a vector file (recommended formats: pdf, ai, eps, svg).

A vector file is made up of lines and mathematical shapes rather than pixels, meaning it never loses quality when enlarged.
To check whether your file is vector-based, open and zoom in: if the lines remain sharp and smooth, it’s a vector file. If they become blurry or pixelated, it isn’t.

If you don’t have a vector version, you can request it from your logo designer or our graphics team can create it for you at a small additional cost.

Define the logo orientation

As mentioned earlier, the mat’s design is oriented according to the direction of entry:
• for outdoor mats, the logo or text should face those arriving.
• for indoor mats, decide whether it should be read from inside or outside.

This detail is crucial — especially for custom-shaped recessed mats where corrections aren’t possible once production begins.

Review the graphic preview

After receiving your specifications, zerbini.shop will always send you a free digital preview of your design before production starts.
This step allows you to:
• view the logo placement
• review shape and measurements
• check proportions, colors and text
• request any changes if needed

Examine the preview carefully — once you approve it, production will begin immediately.

Conclusion

Now you have everything you need to create your custom doormat.
And if you have any doubts along the way, our customer support team will guide you through each step — ensuring you receive a doormat that truly represents your business, right from the entrance.
