Maintenance

Cleaning a natural coir doormat requires consistency and care. Since coir fibers tend to absorb moisture, it’s extremely important not to use water, whether by hand or in a washing machine.

Here’s the best way to take care of it:

  1. Shake the doormat by turning it upside down on a rack; you may also use a carpet beater.
  2. Brush the surface with a stiff-bristled brush to remove remaining dirt.
  3. For a deeper clean, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush. As natural coir tends to shed, it’s recommended to vacuum at low power.
  4. Occasionally sprinkle bicarbonate of soda across the mat’s surface. Leave it to act for 15–20 minutes, then remove it with a stiff brush. Finish by vacuuming to remove any residue.
  5. Clean the rubber or vinyl backing with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
  6. Caution: do not machine wash.
