Considered a precious source of life, people consumed the fresh or dried pulp, coconut milk, and sprouts. Beyond its nutritional value, coconuts offered another opportunity that was soon discovered and valued: their fibers were extremely strong and easy to work with.

From its origins in ancient Asia to its global use today, coconut fiber has proven to be a durable, versatile, and sustainable material. Its unique properties, combined with environmental compatibility, ensure its relevance in industries ranging from agriculture to construction and home products. From Coconut to All-Purpose Fiber

Coconut fiber, also known as coir, has a long history spanning several millennia. Its use is first documented in the Indian subcontinent around 1500 BCE, where coconut palms were abundant and widely integrated into daily life.

Early references in Vedic religious texts, such as the Rigveda, the oldest document of Indian literature and civilization, mention ropes and threads made from plant fibers for both ceremonial and practical purposes. Later texts describe methods for extracting and processing coconut fibers, showing that coir was already a functional and important material for everyday life and maritime activities.

Although coconut palms did not naturally grow in Europe, coconut-based products gradually spread through long-distance trade networks. From the Middle Ages onward, Arab merchants played a key role in distributing coconut products from Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and parts of East Africa to Mediterranean markets. European interest in coconuts increased in the late Middle Ages, with explorers such as Marco Polo describing coconut palms in regions like Sumatra and the Andaman Islands, highlighting their economic and cultural significance.

During the Age of Exploration (15th–16th century), coir ropes and threads were widely used on European ships sailing between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. This maritime use contributed to the global spread of coconut palms and coir products.

Industrial-scale production began only in the 18th and 19th centuries with European industrialization. In 1840, British entrepreneur Thomas Treloar founded Treloar & Sons in London, one of the first companies to commercially produce coir for rugs, ropes, and other products.

The first coconut fiber factory in India, located in Alleppey (Kerala), Darragh Smail & Company, was founded in 1859 by Irish-American entrepreneur James Darragh. Coconut fiber was referred to as “Cocoa Mats” in American English, and Darragh Smail & Co. Ltd. maintained its headquarters and offices at 177 Water Street, New York.

Today, coconut fiber is still valued worldwide for its durability, versatility, and sustainability.

 

Why Coconut Fiber Matters

Coconut fiber is a versatile, strong, and eco-friendly natural fiber, ideal for numerous industrial, commercial, and domestic applications. Key physical properties that make it unique include:

High tensile strength: Coir fibers can withstand mechanical stress without easily breaking, making them perfect for rugs, ropes, and brushes.

One Fiber, Two Types

There are two main types of coir:

Brown coir is obtained from fully mature coconuts. Its fibers are thin, strong, and highly abrasion-resistant. They are used to make doormats, brushes, and burlap fabrics. Mature fibers contain more lignin and less cellulose than cotton or flax, making them stronger but less flexible. They consist of very short filaments, about 1 mm long, with a diameter of 10–20 μm.

White coir comes from coconuts harvested before full maturity. The fibers, which are white or light brown, are finer and smoother but also more delicate. They are generally spun into ropes or cords.

 

The Global Coconut Fiber producers: From Asia to Brazil

The worldwide coir market is estimated at $1.25–1.45 billion in 2025, with a projected annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.2–8.7% over the next decade.

Asia dominates global production, accounting for roughly 90% of output.

Top producers (2024–2025 data):

India: The undisputed leader, producing over two-thirds of global coir and employing 550,000 workers in the sector. In 2024, India exported coir and related products worth approximately $352 million, with China as the main buyer.

Sri Lanka: Holds a significant share, especially in high-value products like premium fiber. Together with India, it covers about 90% of the raw coir market.

Vietnam: The second-largest exporter of coir floor coverings, with investments boosting production by over 50% in recent years.

Indonesia: Although the top producer of raw coconuts, its coir industry slowed in 2024 but remains a key player for the Asian market (South Korea and China).

Philippines: Maintains relevance due to large plantations, though a considerable portion of coconuts is used for food.

Brazil: The fourth-largest exporter of coconut and other plant fibers, holding 5.77% of global exports in 2024.

 

How Coconut Fiber is Produced

The production of coir is a detailed artisanal-industrial process:

  1. Coconut harvesting: Coconuts are collected, either fully mature (brown coir) or partially mature (white coir).
  2. Pulp removal: The inner pulp is removed to access the outer husk, or shell.
  3. Soaking and retting: The husk is soaked in water to soften it. This retting process lasts from days to weeks, separating fibers from the woody material and residual pulp. Brown coir is soaked naturally in ponds or rivers, a slower method that preserves fiber strength. White coir may use hot water or chemicals for a faster process, keeping fibers soft and spinnable.
  4. Fiber separation: Fibers are mechanically extracted by beating the husk to detach them from the harder material.
  5. Cleaning and sorting: Fibers are washed, sorted by length and quality, and dried in the sun or in drying facilities.
  6. Final processing: Brown fibers are carded, combed, and sometimes braided for doormats, mats, or brushes. White fibers are spun into ropes or threads.

Shake the doormat outdoors or use a carpet beater to remove surface dirt and dust.

Vacuum at low power without rotating brushes to remove dirt embedded in the fibers.

Brush stubborn dirt with a soft-bristle brush.

To sanitize, sprinkle baking soda, let sit for 15–20 minutes, then remove with a soft brush.

Water cleaning should be minimal, using cold water and a small amount of mild soap. Always air-dry flat, preferably in the sun, avoiding folding or hanging to prevent deformation.
